Analysis of the Use of CASEP Solar Ovens:

Conclusions

1. The Use of the Solar Ovens is High

Although it is difficult to estimate systematic errors, the following measurements give us confidence that use is high.

When there is good sun, Use = 54 ± 0.6 %    and

68% of the women use their ovens more than 30% of sunny days.

2. The Ovens Last a Long Time

Of the ovens between 0 - 4 years old, 80% are still in use,

Of those between 5-9 years old, 37% are still in use, and

Of those 10 or more years old, 33% are still in use.

3. Use Depends On:

The Country: A part of this dependency originates from the difference in frequency of visits among countries. But our analysis could not totally explain this dependency - for example, we still do not understand why the use in Honduras is higher in comparision with other countries.

The Month of the Visit: Although mostly seeing visits only when it was sunny weather, it's still obvious that use decreases in times of rain.

The Month of Construction (slightly): It seems that if the construction workshop was done during rainy weather, this decreases the average future use.

The Beginning of Follow-Up (slightly): It seems that the later follow-up visits are begun, the lower the average of future use. We need to investigate more if this dependency is correlated to whether or not the woman built the oven herself, and, whether or not it's her own oven.

Frequency of visits (visits/year): Use, as a function of the frequency of visits, does not vary when there are more than 6 visits per year. Rather, the use abruptly descends when the frequency of visits is less than 6 per year. This dependency is also more pronounced during the years following afterwards. It seems that two years of intensive follow-up is not enough.

Years of Follow-Up: It seems that if the frequency of visits is enough in subsequent years, the acception of technology increases with the years. The fact that use in Guatemala decreases with years is due to its low frequency of visits.

4. The Analysis Was Useful

For CASEP: This analysis showed us various forms of improving our work.

For Others: I hope that this analysis demonstrates to you all that the solar oven is a technology that can be accepted if one introduces and promotes it intensively.
